Finding My Way...

Well, just as I stated when trying to get into the program of adult education, I suppose if we all knew exactly what we were supposed to be when we grew up, we would never get stuck in the revolving door of education. As a non-traditional student, my plan was to attend Western Wyoming Community College and obtain my Associates Degree in Criminal Justice. I did just that but I still wasn't satisfied.

So...I went on and obtained my Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of Wyoming. I decided to take a little break from the books and applied for the position of Project Director for a non profit program funded by the Wyoming Department of Health. I did in fact get that job and all of a sudden I went from a college student to a Program Director. This position would prove to be the best work experience I have ever received in my life. I have done everything from pay the bills, handle press and media, direct others, conduct conferences, pass local legislation and work in the schools with all ages.

My favorite part of this experience was definitely the youth component but the most amazing accomplishments were the policy driven changes that happened directly from working with adults. After three years of working in this position, I felt like I needed to learn more about educating others. My profession allows me direct access to the community and we have clear objectives that revolve around changing community norms. I felt that there could not have been a better suited Masters program to fit my needs than the Masters of Arts, concentrating on adult education.

My personal strengths include determination and preserverance. Once I set my mind to something, I will get it done. I am very organized and well disciplined. I do not take the education process lightly. This could be partially because of the fact that I have struggled so hard to make it through such challenging educational persuits, as I am the first in my family to attend and graduate college. I have also been completely responsible for the financial aspect of my education. I can attest to anyone that not only is education an important endeavor, but it can be attained by anyone who puts forth the effort.

Now, a couple months away from obtaining my Masters of Arts, I feel more knowledgeable and motivated then ever. I plan to obtain this in May of 09 and in July of 09, I will have worked in the Program Director position for five years. After I reach these two goals, I plan to job hunt in the Colorado area. I hope to find a position that allows me to positively affect others, whether personally or through community change and I can not wait to start a whole new chapter. Perhaps after a few years, I will take another shot at furthering my education once more. For it is truly what keeps me going.
